Experts predict that side partings will sweep the nation this year
Hair industry experts have predicted that 2023 will see side partings sweep the nation with searches for ‘side parting hairstyles’ up by 90% since the start of the year.
According to Neal & Wolf’s 100 Years of Hair report, side swept hair and the side fringe are some of the biggest trends of the century and in 2023, the style is being modernised with less structure and added texture to give more flow and bounce for that ‘I woke up like this’ look.
Laura Elliot, Head of Education at Neal & Wolf explains: “The side parting is a look that’s synonymous with the 2000s and it’s set to make a big return this year with the likes of Maya Jama and Florence Pugh paving the way for more contemporary takes on the style. Side swept hair, partings and fringes work well with a variety of popular trends from relaxed bouncy face-framing layers to slick-back updos.
“Our salons are starting to see an uplift of customers asking for side styled cuts but here are three key things to consider with your client…”
Is your client wanting a deep side parting?
A deep side parting is proving to be a popular power look this year, but it might not be for everyone. Laura says: “A deeper side parting, starting further along the eyebrow is more suited to those who are committed to consistently styling their hair to one side. If your client prefers to have flexibility and sweeps their hair to either side or occasionally styles from the middle, opt for a more subtle and off-centre parting.”
Does your client actually want side bangs?
Ask your client to consider whether they want a fuller side fringe cutting in or some softer layers. Laura explains: “A fuller fringe that sits around eye level is most suited to shorter cuts like bobs and pixies as it can create the illusion of thicker hair and will frame the face perfectly. For longer hair, consider longer bangs that sit slightly lower around the cheek bone and below the ear to keep hair looking voluminous.”
How long should your clients’ layers be?
Think about the ways your client likes to style their hair so you can keep it in mind when adding layers. Laura says: “If your client knows they like to slick their hair back into a striking wet look, then you should avoid shorter layers around the side parting that will be harder to hold in place. If your client prefers to have movement in their hair when wearing it down or styling wispy updos, shorter layers will provide more texture and depth to play with.”
