pink hairstylesA new survey commissioned by Andrew Collinge reveals that the average woman changes her hairstyle an incredible 104 times over her lifestyle.

According to research by the former British Hairdresser of the Year, between the ages of 13 and 65 the average woman will change her hair at least twice a year.

The survey of 3,000 women reveals that most will try out at least three different shades over the years, with two thirds of women trying out a fringe at least once.

Perhaps the influence of coiffure chameleons like Rihanna and Victoria Beckham is to blame.

It's easy enough for celebs to change their look on a weekly basis, relying on wigs, extensions and personal stylists to transform their tresses.

For us back in the real world, apparently the most common reason for a new look is plain old boredom.

However, it's no surprise to hear that the end of a relationship is one of the most popular reasons.

"Women have always used their hair as a way of altering their appearance as it often has the greatest impact visually," says Andrew.

But he adds that changes don't need to be dramatic to make an impact. Take Jennifer Aniston, who has inspired thousands of women to copy her hairstyle over a lifetime with very subtle changes in colour and styling.

"You can add modern texture without altering the length just by adding some layers or by drying and styling differently," comments Andrew. "Hopefully, with the help and advice of their hairdresser they are making these smaller changes to a style which already suits them."

Top ten reasons listed for a change of hairstyle

2. 'I was bored'

3. To boost confidence

4. After a relationship break-up

5. 'To re-invent myself'

6. Fashion / trend changes
