As the Queen celebrates 60 years on the throne, we look back at the changing celebrity hairstyles which have influenced hairdressing trends, clients and photographic collections since her reign began. Here we look at the sixties stars whose looks helped shape a decade.
Her Majesty's second decade on the throne coincided with a serious shift in hairdressing trends, shaped by the one and only Vidal Sassoon. Gone were the weekly trips to the salon for a shampoo and set, replaced by wash-and-wear styles that could be cared for at home.
As well as revolutionising how women maintained their hair, the sixties also saw a seismic shift in youthful trends. Teenagers were no longer copying their parents' styles, but were embracing entirely new looks of their own - sometimes with shocking results.
Here, Karine Jackson Karine Jackson, London shares her thoughts on the swinging sixties star styles.
Twiggy
"Twiggy was known for her short hair styles. Even when her hair was actually longer, she made it appear shorter with clever styling and this encouraged woman to free themselves of their long locks. This is where hairdressing came into its own and Twiggy was at the forefront of iconic styles of the era."
Marianne Faithfull
"Marianne's look has been in and out of fashion ever since she first rocked it in the 60s. We are again starting to see the revival of the shorter disconnected layers around the front which frame the face. This cut was chic rock-chick in a period of great style and fun. Woman were not scared of doing new things with their hair."

Audrey Hepburn
"The most distinguished feature of Audrey's look was always her short fringe. It was iconic throughout the 1960s and shows off her beautiful face as well as highlighting her big brown eyes. We are now seeing a big trend in micro-fringes once agai."
Catherine Deneuve
Catherine Deneuve
"Catherine's hair is the classic girl-next-door look. She was great at looking innocent but behaving badly. The 60's were all about short miniskirts and bouncy girl next door hair!"
