Ombré lengths
Graduated colour has been an underground favourite for a couple of years, with fashionable fans including Alexa Chung and Drew Barrymore sporting the look for the last few seasons. This year the trend went global with interpretations as bold or subtle as desired.

Crazy colour
This year saw celebrities go crazy for colour, with vibrant and punky shades no longer restricted to the likes of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj - although they remain masters of the trend. Whether worn woven through the lengths in a dip-dye style or applied globally, shades including pink, blue, purple and green have been worn by a surprising array of stars in 2011.

Top knots
Once a bad-hair day saviour, the top knot has transformed to a red carpet look in its own right, providing a cool-girl alternative to the updo. Showing off chiselled cheekbones, creating a mini-facelift in a flash, the top knot also shows off sparkling earrings and intricate necklines perfectly.

1920s
A catwalk hit for Autumn/Winter which is set to continue throughout next year, Hollywood starlets are harking back to the roaring 20s for their hairstyle inspiration. After countless seasons referencing the 1940s and 50s, cropped styles finished with fingerwaves and sharp head-hugging bobs are all set to be popular throughout 2011, thanks in part to Baz Luhrman's upcoming Great Gatsby adaptation.

Star styles: Evan Rachel Wood, Kate Bosworth, Fearne Cotton, Diane Kruger

Crops
Short hair enjoyed a renaissance this year, spurred on by Emma Watson's pixie crop and worn best by Evan Rachel Wood who gave a masterclass in lopped-off lengths that would put Dannii Minogue' styling skills to shame.

Spotted on the catwalks at Louis Vuitton, Emanuel Ungaro and Marc Jacobs, the high ponytail fast became a celebrity favourite in 2011. Part dominatrix, part 80s Madonna, this season's ponytail is pulled tight back from the crown with a smooth polished finish and exaggerated lengths.
