Cannes day one: messy braids rule the red carpet

Messy braids were the runaway trend from day one of Cannes, with Nicole Kidman, Blake Lively and Adele Exarchopoulos all opting for effortlessly undone plaited styles. Adele combined tousled, Bardot-inspired volume on top with a messy, undone braid slung over one shoulder. Eschewing a band at the end, she appears to have opted for the session stylist's favourite trick of back-brushing and clamping with an iron rather than tying off. Blake Lively never fails to inspire with her long-hair looks and this high, braided ponytail is a prime example. Sleek and smooth at the front and textured through the back, this is a gorgeous red-carpet look. We'll also take those earrings, please.   Nicole Kidman was woman of the hour yesterday, as her Grace Kelly biopic enjoyed its premiere. On the red carpet she opted for an unusual plaited look, with hair effortlessly twisted together around the sides and then left loose through the lengths. All hail the half plait!
