Brief encounter: laura kelly
Spa 6 opened in August last year and follows the true philosophy of a spa, with an extensive heat and water therapy suite, and a full range of beauty treatments.
How did you get into the beauty industry?
As a beauty therapist in West Sussex I fell in love with the Decléor range and moved to London to work in Harrods for the brand. This resulted in a 10-year progression through the company.
What is your greatest business achievement?
When I was salon sales manager for Grafton International my sales team brought in sales that were more than 6% up on the previous year in a climate where many health and beauty suppliers reported a decrease or plateau in sales. I had put a marketing plan in place and loved seeing the results and consumer reaction to it.
The most satisfying/rewarding time in your career?
Making a successful transition from a career focused heavily on sales to spa operations. It was something I planned to do for a long time and I am enjoying it immensely.
The best career advice you have ever been given?
To understand the importance of reliability and preparation.
Three things you couldn't do your job without?
The entire hotel team at Cotswold Waterpark Four Pillars Hotel - there is a great culture of sharing ideas and supporting each other to ensure success; support from our suppliers - we use their expertise in many ways, from promotional support to training; and our members and guests who remind us what it's all about and provide valuable feedback.
Best and worst aspects of your job?
Best would be the autonomy I have been given to run the spa. I love the marketing side and, of course, the sales side of things. The 15-strong Spa 6 team are all fantastic to work with. The worst part has to be business fore-casting.
Future business ambitions?
It would be great to get involved with group-level management.
Imagine you are at the start of your career, what would you change?
I wouldn't.
Would you do it all again?
Most definitely!
