Beverley Knight revealed that she personally road-tested the Mizani range before signing on the line as celebrity ambassador, in an up-close-and-personal chat with beauty bloggers.
"I was familiar with Mizani, but I wanted to be able to talk about the products with authority and with real knowledge," she told us. "And after giving it all a thorough trial, I'm pleased to report it got two thumbs up."
See what else Beverley had to say about Mizani, role models and her 'Lazy' hair-washing technique in our five-minute interview below!
Are there any other celebrities who inspire your style?
My current favourite is
Lupita Nyong'o; she just looked like a princess at the Oscars and her skin is incredible. My all-time favourites are Grace Jones and Skin from Skunk Anansie, who are both so fierce.
You look amazing in the Mizani campaign - are you a fan of glamming up?
When I'm performing, I love to get dressed up and go all out with the glamour, but when it's just me going to the shops or the gym, then no way. As long as I have my mascara on, I feel human!
I think these days there's a lot of onus on how younger stars look; it's a disappointing state of affairs when what you do is trumped by what you look like.
Have you always been interested in hair and beauty?
When I was younger, I thought I looked like a geek. I had these big eyes that took up my whole head and I just wanted to look like my mum and my sister - I was very awkward! As I've got older I've become a lot more accepting of myself and now I celebrate what makes me 'me'. My big eyes mean you can see me on stage!
Which is your favourite shot from the Mizani campaign?
The curly style. I'm used to seeing myself with a sleeker look so it made a nice change. I've had every kind of hairstyle over the years - short, long, weave, no weave, colour... but never full-on curls. That look made me feel great.
What's your haircare regime?
My hair is natural, so I favour the
Thermasmooth Range. I'm actually really lazy when it comes to washing it though - let me tell you about Bev's Lazy Way of Washing Hair!
I get in the bash and dunk my hair under the water, then wash it with Thermasmooth shampoo - twice. Then I put on the conditioner. I'm not a hairdresser and I don't want to pull at my hair or snag it while it's wet, so I just pat the conditioner on in sections and use my fingers to work it in. Then I put on a showercap and actually sit and enjoy my bath!
After that, I wash the conditioner off and wrap my hair in a towel. Once it's almost dry, I apply
Smooth Guard and blow-dry and that's it; it just stays smooth. Sometimes I'll put it in three French braids overnight to create some kinky waves - that's a great technique because it avoids applying any more heat.
Do you have any other hair styling tips?
Wash your hair regularly! I've previously been guilty of thinking, 'oh I can get away with it for another day' but that's when it becomes too dry. That, and use a deep-conditioning treatment regularly.
