Published 20th Dec 2012 by rachael
January might be a quite month in salons for budget-conscious clients cautious after the Christmas period, but it's also the month that sees stars and trends start to shape the new year.

This year saw an influx of talented female stars dominating the charts, from chart-friendly favourites like Adele and Lana Del Rey to trend-setting style-leaders like Azealia Banks and Grimes.

Actresses also made an impact, with a host of strong female characters furthering the trend set by the likes of Rooney Mara in 2011.

Here are our top three hairstyles of January 2012..

Lana Del Rey

With a big voice and even bigger hair, Lana is a true poster girl for old-fashioned glamour.

Always immaculately styled and usually sporting a jumbo bouffant paired with extra-long lengths, Lana takes the classic girl-group look and gives it a 21st century twist.

The key for keeping this look current? A super-glossy finish for squeaky-clean, impossibly healthy-looking hair.

Lana isn't afraid to mix things up with colour either - this year we have seen her with red, brunette and even vampish black hair.

Look to love: January saw Lana's first appearance on UK television, appearing on Jonathan Ross with super-shiny, Adele-worthy volume.

Felicity Jones

Burberry model Felicity made a name for herself as a 60s style icon in Cemetery Junction and has fast become an indie-film favourite starring in Like Crazy and The Scribbler as well as appearing on stage in London.

The East-London dwelling actress combines classic English rose beauty with an indie-girl twist, for a look that's drawn comparisons to the the original queen of quirk, Zooey Deschanel.

With her glossy brunette locks, sweeping fringe and penchant for vintage ladylike styles, Felicity fast become one to watch on the red carpet - and will remain so throughout 2013 as her career continues to grow/

Look to love: Stepping out at the Golden Globes in January, this beehive and peekaboo combination is a winning look.

Edie Campbell

Model, Edie, comes from fine fashion stock; her mother is Sophie Hicks, a former style editor at Vogue.

Edie is also a keen (and talented!) horse-rider, having won Glorious Goodwood in the first all-ladies horse race.

With her long dishevelled locks and long sweeping fringe, Edie is the latest in a long line of willowy London cool girls rocking the effortless grunge look - see also; Alexa Chung, Cara Delevingne and Harley Viera Newton.

Edie recently cropped off her locks for a shorter style, which she also rocks - that natural texture works well with either length.

Look to love: This January, Edie has the prestigious honour of closing the Chanel Spring/Summer 2012 Couture show as the traditional 'bride' who walks the runway last.
