Barbers Dan Gregory and Peter Cranfield collaborated to create the Barbercan collection, inspired by London's Barbican centre.
The aim was to achieve a very masculine collection with London’s Barbican centre as the back drop. Says Dan: "With its architecture, square foundations and texture of brickwork, the building emulated the square foundation in our hairstyles along with the texture so it was a perfect match."
"Pete and I met through mutual barbering friends about eight years ago in Liverpool," he continues. "We established a really good friendship and respect for each other’s work and our friendship just grew from there. We had this idea about creating collaborations between barbers from all over the country to show how the UK has some great talent in men’s hairdressing so we met up in London with our good friend and photographer Michael Leckie and came up with an idea to create a collection that showcased the foundation of traditional barbering with a creative edge. Using techniques such has clipper over comb and scissor over comb as well as razor cutting, this collection was a perfect way to showcase these techniques"
Despite two strong personalities working on the same shoot, there were no clashes of opinion, says Dan. “It was amazing how smoothly the shoot went," he says. "There was no compromise needed what so ever. Hairdressing is about being creative and unique so we just shook hands and went for it and were very happy with end result. It was almost like we could see what was going through each other’s minds."
"We both created two styles each that we had spoken about when we put the mood board together a few weeks before for the collection. We both wanted to do razor cutting and tapering so with the mood board in mind we came to a decision that we would do a classic cut and a creative cut each, the rest was trust and understanding in each other’s abilities and we let each other be creative and decided after we met the models in the casting."
