Are Old Hollywood Bobs The ‘It Girl’ Cut of The Year?

Are Old Hollywood Bobs The ‘It Girl’ Cut of The Year?

We think it’s safe to say that bobs aren’t going anywhere (have they ever?!), thanks to The Golden Globes, but something tells us that old Hollywood bobs are officially the statement style of 2026 (Selena Gomez, we're looking at you!).

Here, Laura Elliott, head stylist and educator at Neäl & Wølf, shares why the chic and classic cut is having a moment, and a step-by-step guide to achieving it.

“At the Golden Globes, celebrities like Selena Gomez and Amanda Seyfried brought the old Hollywood bob back to the red carpet, styling it with soft, glamorous waves that feel romantic yet modern,” Laura tells us. “To achieve the old Hollywood bob, you want movement that looks effortless such as gentle waves that start a little below the roots and flow naturally through to the ends. The key is a relaxed texture with a touch of shine, so it catches the light without looking stiff or over styled.

“Selena wore her Hollywood bob with a deep side part which added asymmetry and sophistication, while the roundedness at the ends add to the romantic feel,” she says. “Selena’s stylist has added plenty of volume at the crown which gives it lift without being overdone, and the overall texture is relaxed, not rigid. This keeps the look approachable and very wearable.”

Step-by-Step to Achieving the Perfect Old Hollywood Bob

1. For the best results, start with hair that’s freshly washed or slightly second day hair as this helps the Hollywood waves hold better. Make sure to apply a heat protectant spray to prevent damage before styling.

2. Selena’s look features a deep side part, which adds sophistication to the look and frames the face beautifully. Position the side part where feels most comfortable for your client.

3. To begin the styling process, divide the hair into manageable sections to ensure even waves. Using a medium sized curling wand (around 1-1.5 inches) wrap each section away from the face for a uniform, glamourous wave. I would recommend holding the hair on the wand for around 8-10 seconds, any longer can make the curls too tight for that soft Hollywood feel.

4. Once all the sections have been curled and cooled, gently run your fingers or a wide tooth comb through the hair to soften the curls into loose, elegant waves. Apply a lightweight texturising spray or finishing spray to give the waves movement and hold without stiffness.

5. Finally, for the signature ‘romantic bob’ look, tuck the ends slightly under using a round brush and hairdryer, then add a small amount of shine serum or light hair oil on the ends to give it that Hollywood glow without making the hair greasy.”
