Antoniou hair & beauty offers calm in canterbury

George Antoniou, owner of Antoniou Hair & Beauty, decided the recession was the perfect time to invest in a major refurbishment for the salon which he has owned since 1974.

Says George: "We wanted to create a calm, relaxing and beautiful salon. During an economic decline in particular, we want to offer our clients more than just the usual salon. We wanted to create an environment where they could come and relax and unwind and know that they were receiving the best service."

The transformation took three months, with much of the furniture custom-made by a carpenter, working closely with George. Bespoke pieces include cabinets at the styling stations. Despite being a listed building, renovations went smoothly thanks to "a brilliant team of builders" and the salon remained open throughout.

What is the colour scheme of the salon?
Our colour scheme for the salon incorporates browns, creams and golds. We wanted a rich, calm and opulent environment.

What are the floor materials?
Our reception area has beautiful, black marble tiles; taking parts of it up during the damp proofing was no mean feat. The main salon has a cream tiled floor which is durable and non-slippery. The beauty area has a wooden floor that blends in with the overall décor.

Describe your reception area.
The reception area is a separate room from the main salon and has a focal fireplace which we light in the colder months. We have a sofa and two large armchairs in our reception which provide a comfortable area for waiting clients.

We have a separate waiting area for beauty clients which again has sofas and offers a calm and private area to relax in both before and after treatments.

Is the salon meant to appeal to anyone in particular?
We hope that we have designed a salon that appeals to everyone. We believe that everyone deserves some space to relax from the stresses of everyday life. We offer hair and beauty services to both men and women and have a mixture of clients.

What are the most interesting features in the salon?
The salon has many interesting features because it is such a beautiful, old building. We have a stunning original fireplace in the reception area, original cornicing, and the glasswork above the front door is also original and listed.
