Anne Veck Salon in Oxford is proof positive that energy-saving salon design doesn't have to scrimp on style.
After twelve years in the salon, Anne and business partner Keith Mellen decided it was time for a facelift. As well as freshening up their design with a colourful new look, the refit also included the introduction of
BlueGen technology; a clean, efficient fuel generator the size of a washing machine, which connects directly to your gas supply, delivering low carbon electricity, 24 hours a day.
"We are the only hair or beauty salon in the world using this technology," says Anne. "It drastically reduces energy use and carbon emissions."
A completely new LED lighting plan was also selected for its low-energy benefits. While it might be eco-friendly, it's certainly not boring. "We have continuously changing pastel shades to give ambience," explains Anne. "It's a cool feature for clients but also relaxing and soothing."
So does being green mean restricting your design principles? Not if this salon is anything to go by.
"Expressing yourself is one of the most important parts of a salon design," says Anne. "Avoid the current corporate salon look; so many salons are similar with a black and white shiny design and limited individuality. If you are an independent you must be different from the franchises to succeed."
