Graduation is the hero of Tim Hartley's Rarefied collection, which he showcased in Salon Live at Salon International.

The short graduated hairstyles were influenced by the 1974 Firefly hair cut, but with a new emphasis on the internal geometry of the style.

Tim told the international audience: "Back then graduation was a bit of an unsung hero and I wanted to bring it back."

There was a spontaneous round of applause for Tim and his colourist, Tracey Hayes, when he styled one of the crops in the opposite direction to create a completely different look and showcase the dramatic colour.

Rebellion was another theme which was manifested through the use of bright reds and rich copper tones and dramatic texturised styles.

These are times of rebellion, when people want to challenge authority and I think the hairstyles are reflecting that," Tim said.

"Red is a huge story and textures are strong and making a statement."

Finally Tim transformed two of his models live on stage, much to the delight of the audience. "High fashion cuts can be very simple cuts," he explained as he gave mid-length hair a 70s vibe by layering it and adding a long eyelash skimming fringe.

Having cut a short face-framing fringe into his final model's beautiful pearly bob, it was time for all the models to return to the stage for a stunning finale.
