Chlorine Green

Chlorine induced green hair was the most searched term, with 3,000 monthly searches. Clients with lighter hair are more at risk of this as their hair is typically drier and absorbs more of the chlorine. Clearly a common problem, TikTok's hashtag #stopgreenpoolhair has nearly 550 million views.

To avoid this, Top One stylists suggest the holiday hair tip: “If clients take simple steps, such as making sure to rinse their hair with fresh water before entering the pool, this will stop it from absorbing chlorine and salt. It can be a great first step as this lowers the risk of the dreaded green tinge. We’d also recommend that they wash their hair thoroughly post-swim to ensure that all traces of chlorine are washed away, helping to reduce any more damage."

Top One's fave products for after pool use:

  • Shea Moisture Coconut Oil Leave in Conditioner
  • Coconut oil and shea butter will nourish the hair.
  • Colour Wow Dream Cocktail Coconut Leave-in Treatment
  • Coconut oil and keratin strengthen hair strands and detangle.
  • Joico Moisture Recovery Leave-in Moisturiser
  • Evening primrose oil adds moisture and softens the hair while also reducing frizz

Farewell Frizz

Heat and humidity can contribute to frizzy hair, which is why it's no surprise that this summer saw 2,000 global searches for ‘how to stop frizzy hair’.

Clients travelling to their summer destination by plane will notice how the static acts like a magnet for frizz and flyaways. So, applying a leave-in conditioner before flying can really help them minimise frizz.

Top One stylists add: “We’d highly recommend clients apply a leave-in conditioner before flying to lock in moisture and keep their ends hydrated. Then, before landing, they should quickly run some nourishing hair oil through their ends. This will not only hydrate the hair, but it will also remove any flyaways.”

Top One's fave products for flying clients:

  • Olaplex No 7 Bonding Oil
  • This tames and controls frizz leaving hair feeling smooth.
  • Mark Hill Hydrating Moroccan Argan Oil
  • Vitamins A and E and Omega 6 nourish and hydrate hair.
  • OGX Moroccan Argan Oil

Argan Oil from Morocco helps nutrients soak into each strand, keeping the frizz controlled and leaving hair feeling soft.

Hydration is Key

Clients often struggle with trying to keep hair from drying out in the heat and this is shown through the 1,000 global searches for ‘dry hair on holiday’ in the past month.

UV rays from the sun can contribute to dried out ends, so clients should pack hair care that contains UV protection to limit any dryness.

Top One explain: “The ends of the hair are older, so overexposure to elements like the sun, salt water, and chlorine can dry them out more. The key for clients to avoid dry hair on holiday is to pack moisturising hair care products."

Pool Hair? Don't Care

Knowing the damage chlorine can do to the hair's lengths and ends can be off-putting to clients, with searches for ‘best hairstyles for swimming’ reaching 1,000 throughout July.

Top One suggest styles for those clients looking to enjoy a dip in the pool this summer: “Braids are a fantastic option for swimming as it helps to prevent the hair from knotting. If you aren’t putting your head underwater, popping your hair in a bun is also a great option as it offers some protection against the chlorine and helps to keep it dry. However, if you are swimming with your hair down, we’d recommend applying either a leave-in conditioner or a moisturising hair oil to hydrate and tackle the tangles once you’ve left the pool.”

Avoid Heated Tools

Of course heated tools can damage clients' hair, but luckily the demand for styles created without using them is on the rise; July saw 1,000 Google searches for ‘heatless hairstyles’, whilst #heatlesshair is booming with 1.5 billion views on TikTok.

Top One's holiday hair tip is heatless beachy waves: “A quick way to achieve the classic mermaid waves is for clients to braid their hair before swimming and leave them in while they dry. When they take the braids out, they’ll be left with perfectwaves without having applied extra heat.”
