Relaunching a salon is always an exciting and nerve-wracking process, but for Martine Schupfer and Maxine Batiste, it was also a poignant one.
Josef of Switzerland was first set up on the island of Guernsey back in the 1960s by Martine's husband, and Maxine's father Josef Schupfer, who went on to run it as a successful family business for several decades.
With a view to expansion in mind, Josef bought a new premises on the island, but sadly, he passed away two years ago and was not around to see the finished results.
"Dad wanted to relocate the business to offer clients more space and the premium environment he felt they deserved," explains Maxine. "He bought the building five years ago and it was his dream to make Josef of Switzerland a La Biosthetique concept salon. He had a vision for a calm, contemporary and modern space that would feel really serene."

The renovation of the building was a real family affair, with Josef's son-in-law Steve Batiste carrying out much of the work. Local architects Direct Architectural Solutions and Albert Ewan Design also contributed to the design and furnish of the new space.
Filled with light, the finished salon features 17 styling stations, a dedicated first floor colour area and a private consultation room used to help clients with scalp and skin challenges.
"It took a long time to get the necessary permissions and renovate and refurbish the salon," says Maxine. "Sadly, Dad didn't get to see his dream fulfilled, but I know he would be proud of us. It's an incredible feeling," Maxine reflects.
