58% of UK use AI to find hair businesses and services, report finds

Up to 58% of the UK and US population use AI tools for hair businesses and services in 2026, highlighting a major shift in the way people search for salons, stylists and hair services online.

A new report released by digital marketing agency Salon Guru discovered clients are increasingly relying on Google, AI assistants and recommendation-based search tools to help them choose the right salon and stylist for them.

Based on analysis of 200+ salon websites and salon website visitors over a 12-month period, the Digital Marketing Trends Report for Hair Salons 2026 reveals that authentic, rather than AI-produced content is one of the strongest ranking and recommendation signals.

Original salon photography, verified reviews, detailed service pages and clear booking journeys can help both clients and AI systems understand what a salon genuinely does well.

“Clients want reassurance before they book,” says Phil Evans, Managing Director of Salon Guru. “They want to see real hair transformations, read authentic reviews, find a stylist who specialises in the look they want, and secure an appointment quickly and easily. AI search tools are increasingly rewarding salons that provide that evidence clearly.”

The report also warns that many salons are still focusing heavily on social media visibility whilst overlooking the channels that generate the strongest booking intent. Only 1.5% of website visits were found to come directly from social media platforms, compared to up to 65% of visitors who find Salon Guru’s top performing websites through Google searches.

"We are not saying salons should abandon social media," says Phil. "We are saying the industry has massively overestimated its role in generating new client bookings. Today, clients are searching for services… not scrolling.”

The recommendation is for salons to measure success by bookings, enquiries and revenue generated, not simply by followers, likes or views.

Research also found that users form a judgement about a website’s credibility in as little as 50 milliseconds, expecting immediate answers. Before choosing a salon, potential clients typically evaluate four things within moments of landing on a website:

  • Can I book easily?
  • Is the pricing clear?
  • Do the reviews look genuine?
  • Can I see real results that match the look I want?

The report also revealed the importance of having the right content on a salon website, if you want it to be found via Google and AI search. Salon owners are recommended to include well-written pages with SEO content focusing on the phrases that people are actually searching for. That content should be written in a natural way and backed by structured data to help AI find it.

Local language equally matters. The report found that UK salon optimising only for "hair salons" may miss significant traffic from users searching "hairdressers". Conversely, a US business focusing on "hairdressers" may be targeting terminology that many American consumers rarely use.
