It might seem like a dry topic, but knowing how to be efficient with your energy can increase profit margins, create a more comfortable environment and help attract customers. So what’s not to like?
Smart Energy GB and Dr Paul Swift from the Carbon Trust share their energy saving tips for salons.
Get smart
Asking your energy supplier to install a smart meter is a great first step to save energy. It will help track energy costs, allowing you to budget effectively. You can see by the data recorded by the meter when energy is being wasted. For example, some equipment uses a lot of energy whilst on standby, so you’ll know to unplug them overnight.
Hit refresh
If refurbishing your premises, get advice on lighting, insulation, triple-glazed windows and automatic doors. These can reduce heat loss and energy costs and can help create a comfortable environment for customers. As well as saving you pennies in the long run.
Don’t get in hot water
Energy spend on heating water is likely to be significant. Consider low-flow taps and flow regulators and make sure your boiler is properly sized. Use timers to switch off water heaters half an hour before you close.

Get heat feedback
Only heat where you need, when you need, to the temperature you need. Ask staff and customers for feedback and test thermostats with a thermometer. Ensure heating and cooling don’t run simultaneously, and turn them off well before you close.
Label your lights
Stick labels on light switches so staff easily remember to turn off lights when not in use. Ask your electrician about LED bulbs, as well as occupancy and daylight sensors, to understand how they might save you money.
