Winner of the coveted British Hairdressing Awards Newcomer of the Year category, we caught up with Sophie Springett to get her tips on creating a successful entry.

What made you want to enter the British Hairdressing Awards? The British Hairdressing Awards is probably the biggest hair competition in the UK and represents the highest standard of hairdressing. I've always dreamt of being a part of that so I decided to go for it.

How did you go about putting your entry together? When I start thinking about a shoot I always start by putting together a mood board. It's a great way to develop your story as well as starting to practice the overall looks. After that you can then go about casting the perfect models for your looks, start working with a stylist to create the perfect shapes and textures to compliment the hair.

How did you feel when your name was called as winner? I was in pure shock as the Newcomer category was so strong and always is so it was a real honour to take the trophy home, it probably took at least 2 weeks to actually sink in!

How has you career been impacted since winning? I was awarded my Art Directorship at Toni & Guy. This meant doing the biggest hair presentation of my career with 22 models showcasing creative cut and colour, free expression, history and editorial. It was a huge undertaking but such a an amazing experience to see my work lined up in front of me. Since then I have been traveling round the globe for shows and seminars.

Where do you get your inspiration from? Inspiration is everywhere, fabric, material, clothing, architecture, there's so much around us all the time, it's important to be able to look at everything and see something inspiring.

Would you enter again? Definitely! It was my 2nd time entering last year and I will definitely be entering in again in the future.

What would be your advice to anyone planning on entering? Organisation! If everything is organised your shoot day will be less stressful so you can soundly focus on the hair.

if you fancy making your mark this year - enter the British Hairdressing Awards 2016.
