4 Things to Consider When Your Client Asks for Barbie Blonde

Published 18th Jul 2023 by Chlo Weldon

In the wake of the highly anticipated Barbie movie premier, stylists are already seeing a surge in customers asking for a colour change as #BarbieBlonde trends on TikTok with over 2.4 million views. So, as the new Barbie blonde colour trend begins taking over salons, Laura Elliot, Head of Education at Salon Promotions, is reminding stylists that this shade might not be for everyone and offering four key tips for keeping clients happy and tailoring their treatments for a bespoke Barbie look.

The Barbie film has undoubtedly had a huge impact on the hair industry, with bouncy blowouts, volumised looks and bleached-out buttery tones being requested more frequently across salons,” says Laura. “Although the client comes first, stylists know best and when it comes to a drastic colour change like transitioning to Barbie blonde, it’s important to manage expectations, personalise the process and encourage aftercare.”

Things to consider

Manage expectations

“Consultation is key to managing a client’s expectations. We see so much on social media about clients going blonde in one sitting, but the reality is that this is not always possible due to time constraints and condition of the hair in question. As stylists, we know it could take one, two, three or more visits for a client to go from dark to blonde, it will depend on how much build up is on the hair and how well it lifts. Making your clients aware from the get-go of the sessions needed will ensure they understand the extent of the process and commitment required.”

Experient with formulas

“I’d recommend getting ahead of the curve and working out formulas now to have some prepped and ready to go. An amazing, good quality, hydrating lightener such as the Nëal & Wølf Illumination cream bleach will lift the hair up to seven levels whilst adding moisture and the all-important fatty acids required to boost shine.”

Tailor your process

“Whilst it’s important to note that not everyone’s hair is suitable for a level 10 blonde due to condition, porosity, and hair texture, it’s also important to remember that there is no longer one Barbie. Barbies now thankfully come in all shapes and sizes, and all with different hair – it could be beneficial to guide clients towards a different Barbie look that would be more achievable on their hair type. If your client is insistent on blonde, then a glossing service is the way to go.”

Re-iterate the importance of aftercare

“Aftercare is a must. During the consultation, a great homecare regime should be discussed of which a combination of moisture and protein will be needed to keep hair looking healthy and give the colour longevity.”
