2011 franchisee of the year: tim avory
Franchising is one of the key ways for salon groups to grow and expand, but that can only work with a skillful franchisee at the helm.
Tim Avory of Toni & Guy, Guildford, winner of Franchisee of the Year at HJ's 2011 British Hairdressing Business Awards explains what it takes to be a successful franchiesee.
What are the most important attributes for a good franchisee?
You have to be able to be a good team leader and be able to communicate with your staff. My motto is: Happy staff equals happy clients which equals a successful business.
How, if at all, is being a franchisee different to being an independent salon owner?
Being a franchisee means you are supported by the team behind you, but also free to be as independent as you like.
Does a good franchisee need the same assets as a salon manager?
Yes, if you cannot manage a salon successfully how are you supposed to run a business successfully.
What do you feel makes you stand out as a franchisee?
I think I stand out because I am quite a placid person who listens, which means I gain respect from my staff.
Do you still have a column? Do you think this is important?
Yes, I still run a column 3 days a week, this is important to me because I like to be involved in the day-to-day running of the salon and work with my staff in the same environment. I feel that this creates a more relaxed relationship based on respect.
As a franchisee, what do you expect from a franchisor?
I expect recognition for my achievements and support within my business.
Who did you learn your management style from?
Before opening my first salon I had never managed a business or people, so I developed my own management skills and they seem to be working for me ok.
Describe your management technique in 3 words?
Motivating, fair and fun.
