Styles such as Audrey Hepburn's chic beehive, Twiggy's crop and the classic cuts created by Vidal Sassoon were chosen as the most inspirational by a panel of 800 consumers.
Over a third (34%) of those polled declared the sixties as the decade with the most desirable hairstyles, followed by the 1950s with just over a quarter of the vote (26%).
In third position was the 90s, with the Rachel cut and grunge look securing 19% of the vote. Next came the seventies, then the naughties, with the 1980s in final place.
A spokesperson from Ecigarettedirect.co.uk, who undertook the research, commented: "Retro and vintage fashion is very popular so it's no surprise that the 1950s and 60s have come out top of the poll. It was a classy decade for hair and there were some really creative styles worn during that time."
