The colour team at
Neville Salons have combined two of the most talked-about techniques of the year to create
ombralyage, a freehand technique which melds ombré and balayage.
With its heritage in California, it's no surprise that this look has already been a hit with the A-list, with
Blake Lively,
the Olsen Twins and
Khloe Kardashian all fans of the technique.
And it was Khloe's colourist,
Anya Burton, who flew over to train Neville's colour director
Seniz.
"Combining the two is a great balance," says Seniz, who worked her magic on Kelly Brook (pictured above). "The trend of mixing ombré and balayage is about to evolve colour on a whole new level.
"If you’re starting with a naturally dark base, you may need to lighten your base colour to achieve the milk chocolate foundation. The real artistry comes with the lights. This is where ombralayage does its magic. I start with fine delicate highlights at the root, gradually getting thicker, chunkier and heavier towards the ends. Because I can control exactly where the highlights are placed, and depending on the amount of lightener used on each hair strand, you get a variation of different colours, tones and intensity. The parts that get less lightener only lift to a caramel shade, and where you go heavier with the lightener, you get honey tones…the result is a seamless graduation of multiple colours."
