The 2014 MTV Movie Awards saw Hollywood's hottest descend on the red carpet to celebrate the finest moments in film over the last twelve months - including the all-important categories of
Best Shirtless Performance and
#WTF Moment.
Unlike
the Oscars, the MTV Movie Awards are a more relaxed affair with a much younger crowd. Which, you would think, would mean more exciting hair.
Unfortunately, on this occasion, everyone seemed to play it safe. Nice blow-dries and old-Hollywood curls were very much order of the day, although there were a few starlets who kept it interesting.
Keep reading for our best-tressed stars from the 2014 MTV Movie Awards red carpet...

Looking more than a little Rapuznel-esque, Ellie Goulding kept things simple with tousled beachy waves. Paired with a scraped-back parting and cool matte finish, this is the perfect undone look.

Zendaya has always been one of our long-lock idols, but following a recent trim she also proves that she can make (relatively) short styles work. Balayage ends and a
swooshed-over side-part add a cool 90s feel to the style.

Shailene Woodley has also gone for the chop recently, albeit in more dramatic style than Zendaya. Here she keeps things simple and elegant with a sleek side-part and smoothed down sides. Very chic, that's for sure, but perhaps a little grown-up for such a fun red carpet?

We can always rely on Lupita Nyong'o to make the red carpet a more interesting place, thanks in part to her relationship with star stylist
Ted Gibson. After a fabulous award season showcasing the versatility of her crop, we're loving seeing her with this longer look.

Vintage Hollywood glamour is the watchword for Rita's style, with massive curls slung over to one side. Hairdresser and HJ favourite, Chris Appleton, just keeps it coming - how many other stars could go from
these braids to those curls and work them both?

Model Christine Teigen opted for text-book beachy waves, packed with shine and a healthy bounce to add that model magic to an otherwise grungy style.

Thank god for Iggy Azalea, who brought a sense of youth and adventure to the red carpet with her jumbo ponytail. Crimped and brushed out to create a fabulous silhouette, this style has more than a hint of
Chanel AW14 hair to it.

Beachy waves were order of the day for Katerina Graham, albeit with more of a rock chick finish. Did they all come straight from Coachella, or is Hollywood enjoying a bedhead revival?

Rihanna kept things surprisingly soft, with a romantic curly updo. Paired with
a billowing Ulyana Sergeenko gown, this ethereal look is something pretty different for Rihanna - and shows she can do romance just as well as racy.

Also keeping things paired-back for once, Nicki Minaj opted for streamlined elegance. Hair styled in a side part and kept sleek and smooth through the top, this is perhaps the most simple style this chameleon has ever worn - and it works.

Snooki showcased her ombré red hair through side-slung bouncy curls - the perfect texture to show off that colour gradient. Normally we're all for celebs keeping it slightly more natural, but a few extensions might have given this style extra oomph.

We can't get enough of this peachy shade on Debby Ryan. Unfortunately, no matter how great the hue is, those dry ends are a bit of a distraction. Get the girl some serum - or a trip to the salon for a quick trim - stat!

Bella Thorne is one of our red-carpet favourites, never afraid to mix things up with
a few braids or something more unusual. Unfortunately for us - or perhaps selfishly - she kept things simple on this occasion with straight, smooth lengths.

Jenna Dewan gave dual-texture a trial, with a sleek crown area and more voluminous, bouncy lengths. Throw in a centre parting too, and this is a really difficult look to pull off - but she totally manages it.

When Jessica Alba hits the red carpet, you know what you're going to get. Fabulous colour, soft waves and healthy-looking lengths. No change from the usual on this occasion, then, but if it ain't broke...
