Beauty therapy student, Wendy Campbell (37) of Abingdon and Witney College in Oxfordshire, won second place in the live final of the World Skills UK beauty therapy competition. One of eight finalists from across the country, she was awarded a certificate and prize of a Silhouette voucher worth £75.

Accompanied by course tutor Heidi Jordison and her 16 year old daugher Emma, who volunteered to be a model for the day, they travelled to Cheshire for the four and a half hour competition.

Demonstrating a high degree of skill and professionalism, Wendy had to carry out five different beauty treatments (facial and eyelash tint; full day make-up; conversion to evening make-up; pedicure; and manicure) within strict time constraints, and under the watchful eye of three judges -- who gave her glowing and positive feedback saying she was very professional, confident, and gave excellent client care.

Wendy, a single mother of two said: "It's not easy working and studying at the same time, but I would encourage everyone who isn't already qualified to go back to college.  It is very fulfilling to learn new skills, but you need to be organised and know how to pioritise."

Wendy starts her Level 3 beauty therapy course in September and is looking forward to learning more.  Once qualified, her future ambition is to run her own beauty business and also train to be a lecturer.
