Sharon Malcolm at Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing won HJ's Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year at the
2014 British Hairdressing Awards. We caught up with Sharon to find out what a win meant to her.
How did it feel to have been announced as a finalist for the awards?
Amazing. Like each of the finalists, I found it takes a huge effort and financial commitment to deliver a photoshoot that you’re proud of. It’s a journey and being announced as a finalist makes all the effort worthwhile.
How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner?
Shocked- in the best possible way. Although I felt that Bella was my best collection to date, you never know until your name is called out. The standard from all of the finalists is so high that it’s really down to the wire. After having been a finalist eight times, it was important for me to go with the flow of life and just accept that what’s to be will be.
What is the value of winning a British Hairdressing Award?
The prestige associated with winning Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year cannot be underestimated. For the team at Sharon Malcolm Hairdressing, they’re thrilled to have been part of the journey and are very proud to work in an award-winning salon. For our clients, the support and many messages of congratulations has been overwhelming and for our business, we have already attracted new clientele. In addition, I have been astounded at the level of support and best wishes that I have received from fellow hairdressers from across the UK.
What advice would you give to others when thinking of entering the awards?
Be inspired. Every year, I immerse myself in culture, visiting many exhibitions and keeping up to date on fashion trends. The inspiration for my 2014 collection – Bella – came from an exhibition that I visited on Isabella Blow, which took place at Somerset House the previous year. The strength of Isabella’s style and her name, with Bella meaning ‘beautiful’, was so vivid that it became the basis for my award-winning collection.
Also, one last piece of advice…when you’ve got mixed thoughts, always go with your gut feeling and stay true to yourself.
