Philip Bell at Ishoka Hair and Beauty won HJ's Scottish Hairdresser of the Year at the
2014 British Hairdressing Awards. We caught up with him to find out what winning meant.
How did it feel to have finalised for the awards?
Amazing. For your peers within the industry to vote you in the top six within your region is something truly unbelievable and a fantastic honour .
How did it feel when your name was announced as winner?
I went into complete shock! One of the girls caught a picture of me when my name was announced and I am in a complete daze. As this was my third time winning, which meant I was inducted into the
Hall of Fame, it made the win so much more special to me. I still can’t believe it. I felt very fortunate to have my friends and team with me to celebrate.
What is the value of winning a British Hairdressing Award?
Winning a British Hairdressing Award is the biggest achievement within this industry and, for me, one of my biggest personal achievements. It’s also a fantastic accolade for the salon. Clients love nothing more than going to the best hairdresser within their region so it not only affects me personally it affects my clients.
What advice would you give to others whoa re thinking of entering the awards?
Preparation is key! When starting to think about putting together a collection, you need to do your research to ensure you have all areas covered. Look at your brief and make sure you are fully aware of what you are setting out to do and prepare for any obstacles that could appear on the day. Chat to
photographers,
clothes stylists and
makeup artists and chat about your moodboard and ask them what they feel they can bring to the shoot. Having the right team that works well together makes all the difference.
