Charlotte Mensah at The Hair Lounge won HJ's Afro Hairdresser of the Year at the 2014 British Hairdressing Awards. We caught up with her to find out what winning meant.
How did it feel to have finalised for the awards?
It was a real honour to have been shortlisted again for the third consecutive year.
How did it feel when your name was announced as the winner?
Words cannot describe how it feels to win Afro Hairdresser of the Year for the second time. I really pushed the boundaries this year and wanted to celebrate all of the unique textures of Afro hair in my collection. It's just an awesome feeling; I'm so proud and so happy to be flying the flag for Afro hairdressing. It's truly wonderful.
What is the value of winning a British Hairdressing Award?
It doesn't get any better winning a British Hairdressing Awards as this is our industry's version of the Oscars. It's British Hairdressing at its very best. You become an ambassador for Afro hair as well as raising your profile both in the UK and overseas.
What advice would you give to others when thinking of entering the awards?
My advice would be to read the brief, research catwalk shows and trends for the coming season and book a great photographer and models.
