What hair at the horniman holds for june 2022

The Hair at the Horniman exhibition runs until June 2022 and showcases unexpected stories about hair, from personal stories in South London salons (told via Zoom during 2020’s lockdown) to tales of global hair trade networks.
Putting substance before style, the show highlights hair as a material and explores our complex relationship with hair both on – and off – our heads, including why we care so much about our hair, and how hair is entangled with society’s expectations and our relationships with others.
If you're not in London, don't worry - the exhibition is heading north after June, where it will be shown in Sheffield and then Carlisle, running until 2023.

Curl Power Workshop with Charlotte Mensah
Sunday 12 June, 12pm-2pm
Join award-winning hairstylist and author, Charlotte Mensah for her renowned Curl Power Workshop. In the surroundings of the beautiful Horniman Conservatory, Charlotte will be giving an exclusive, interactive masterclass offering tips and advice on managing curls, afro and mixed heritage textured hair including styling and care tips; transitioning to natural hair; and tricks and techniques for parents on styling children’s curls. The masterclass is followed by a Q&A, drinks and networking.
Charlotte Mensah is the owner and artistic director of Hair Lounge, on London’s Portobello Road and founder of acclaimed product range Charlotte Mensah Manketti Oil, as well as author of ‘Good Hair: The essential guide to afro, textured and curly hair’. She is recognized as the beauty industry’s authority on maintaining natural Afro hair as well as mixed heritage and curly textures.

Creative Hair Portrait Workshop
Sunday 12 June, 10:30 am, 12pm, 2pm and 3:30pm Join artist Habiba Nabisubi in making a unique hair portrait, with help from Mother Nature! Make a self-portrait of your hair (or the hair of someone you love) using nothing but natural materials like moss, leaves and twigs found in the Horniman Gardens and maybe a little eco-friendly glitter. Hair: Untold Stories illustrator Habiba Nabisubi will be facilitating an hour of experimentation, play and fun. Bring your imagination and be prepared to get a little messy! Tickets: Child £7.50. Adults £0. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Most suitable for ages 3+. Sessions last 60 minutes.Bright and Early: Exhibitions Relaxed Opening – Hair: Untold Stories and Cats and Dogs
Saturday 18 June, 9-10am Enjoy our current exhibitions Hair: Untold Stories and Cats and Dogs, during this accessible, relaxed event – a special early viewing for families who are unable to visit when the Horniman is busy, including children with autism spectrum conditions or neurodiverse families. Hair: Untold Stories highlights the qualities of hair as a material, from jewellery and dresses to armour and environmental protection. It also explores our complex relationship with hair both on, and off, our heads – how and why we care so much about our hair, and how hair is entangled with society’s expectations and our relationships to others. Cats and Dogs is an immersive exhibition exploring the scientific, social and cultural role that cats and dogs play in our world, and inviting visitors to go on an exciting, sensory journey, exploring what it’s like to be a cat or a dog.
