Having a great salon manager at the helm will help your salon team with the challenge of bringing professionalism, pride and productivity back to your team. But what does it take to be a great salon manager?
It certainly takes more than just knowing how to run a hairdressing salon. Knowing how to manage a team effectively is every bit as important and that means giving the very best of yourself to set a great example.
The salon manager mantra should be your message - read through below and memorise!
• Adapting a management style to each personality type to get a point across will get more out of the team, but beware of showing favouritism. Stick to the house rules rather than bending them for a particular individual and it’ll make your life easier.
• Identify what makes your staff tick and don’t be afraid to offer incentives tailored to individuals rather than implementing a blanket approach. One team member might think assisting on a shoot is the best reward possible; others would appreciate money or gift vouchers more.
• A good manager communicates constructively and is always diplomatic using neutral rather than personal language. In so doing it appears less like criticism and causes less personal offence.
• Solve problems in as collaborative a way as possible. Getting a group consensus on creative or business decisions will avoid frustration and resentment further on.
• Let your staff know your door is always open if they have a question or problem. Make it known that you invite feedback and don’t feel threatened by the prospect.
