Thousands of tributes to Vidal Sassoon have poured in on Facebook and Twitter. Here are just some of the messages we received;

Kate Norton: I still can't believe you've gone. A great husband, an inspiring craftsman to the hairdressing industry - you will be sorely missed by millions of people who loved and respected you.

Marion Zammit: RIP.Vidal you were a creative genius that inspired us all. We are the hairdressers and artists that we are today because of you. I will never forget my days at Bond Street.

Helen Healy: A true inspiration, who will live on in the creativity of all those he inspired!

Michelle De Ath: He will never be forgotten. His work will continue to inspire and influence for generations to come. RIP.

Craig Watts: Such a huge loss for the industry. The man who gave us the fundamentals to work by and the qualities to aspire to. A sad day indeed.

Richie Byrne: A true legend and a revolutionary in the hairdressing world. RIP

Carolyne Bridget Jones: Very sad news but what an inspirational, talented, creative person who paved the way for future generations... RIP Vidal Sassoon - a name that will never be forgotten.

Simona Patrascu: Can't say how gutted I am. I always wanted to tell him how much I admired him and how much inspiration and determination I got from reading his book - "Never give up. Never give up!"

Chris Parker: His work totally inspired me when I entered this industry to try and be the best I could be. Our profession just lost its most iconic and original thinker. RIP Vidal ... and may the "Greek Goddesses" you meet at Heaven's gates be as beautiful as the ones you created down here.

David Barron: As a young school leaver back in the early 60's with no qualifications, I set about my quest to do for men's hairdressing what Vidal had done for women.

The man credited with changing the face of hairdressing. Passionate, inspirational, totally influential. A man driven to succeed in putting hairdressing on the map.

May his influence and passion live on in our quest to establish hairdressing as one of the best professions to inspire well being, happiness and growth. Always strive to grow, work hard, share your passion and respect others! RIP Vidal.
