Social media expert Valorie Reavis of Linkup marketing says it pays to share the love for Valentines Day.

"We're all aware of the romantic connotations of Valentine's Day, but whether you personally embrace it with passion or hide away until all the hearts and flowers have faded, as a salon owner you can't afford to ignore it.

"Here are some quick tips for picking up some social speed for Valentine's Day:

Focus on a single message
First, running promotions shouldn't be complicated and the more you offer, the harder it is to understand and decide whether to participate or not. When it comes to promotions, simpler is often better.

Pick one message to use across all your marketing. For example, if your Valentine's Day message is 'Sweeter is Always Better' you could tie that into everything you do, be it your email offers, your in-salon promotion, your social media pages and also your website offers. This keeps you focused, makes it easier for your team to explain and your clients to understand.

Think of viral promotions
Valentine's Day is about 'coupling', so why not sweeten the deal by bundling - in other word, create promotions that encourage more spending or more people, or both.

Create a concept that encourages sharing and is sweet enough that your social community can't help but bring their friends (or sweethearts) along too. This helps your social media boulder pick up speed and go farther.

Encourage visits
After the Christmasholidays, many salons and spas experience the New Year lag. Remedy this by adding an in-salon event to your marketing plan for February to get people into the salon, giving them a chance to purchase products, get a gift card, try new services or simply learn to love you even more than they already do.

Whatever your Valentine's Day promotion, make sure you are focused on taking all that momentum from the holidays and amplifying it with a continued fun and engaging focus in January and February.
