Hairdressers Journal can exclusively reveal that Wella Professionals has launched an innovation in colour that will allow hairdressers to create and mix colours using an iPad. The exclusive Color DJ machine, which accompanies the iPad app can mix the bespoke gloss colour mask as requested for use in the salon and at home.
Andreas Kurkowitz, Wella Professionals global colour ambassador told HJ that any colourist or hairdresser who knows the basics will easily be able to use the iPad and the exclusive device to create the exact amount or mix required: "You do everything digitally and Color DJ gives you total control. The machine mixes it for you and the finished product is identical to what is on the iPad."
He added: "Clients can take the colour home to refresh and condition their hair colour safely. As you’ve mixed the colour in the salon you know you can trust clients will be keeping their hair in the best condition."
Here's the full interview with Andreas Kurkowitz, Wella Professionals global colour ambassador so you can find out more…
What is Color DJ?
It’s a device that can mix a customised gloss colour mask. It’s a world first – you mix your colour on an iPad just like a DJ!
What are the benefits of using Color DJ?
It’s not just personalised in the way that you mix three things together, it’s much more precise than that. You have the possibility of creating up to almost 60 billion different mixes!
How does it work?
It’s based on six pigments and a clear tone. You can see the Pantone colour on the iPad and see what your chosen shade will look like. It’s so precise, for example you can set it to add 0.5g of yellow or 2.5g of violet. You can also save the formula in your library so you can get the same mixture for your client again. Or if a client wants to change to a warmer or cooler tone for different seasons you can do that instantly.
What do you love most about using Color DJ?
For me, it’s more than just personalisation. The machine allows you to do things that you wouldn’t be able to do by hand and the technology makes it free from human-error.
Why is it great for salons?
It’s not complicated to teach – it’s a very simple and intuitive to use. If you are a colourist or hairdresser and you know the basics it’s easy to translate that to the device. Before Color DJ mixing colour conditioners by hand made it hard to create the exact amount or mix you wanted. But because you do everything digitally with Colour DJ you have total control. The machine mixes it for you and the finished product is identical to what is on the iPad.
Why will clients love it?
Clients can take it home to refresh and condition their hair colour safely. As you’ve mixed it in the salon you know you can trust clients will be keeping their hair in the best condition. They can add their own fragrance too. There are three fragrance options – Sicilian Bergamot, Hawaiian Orchid or Marrakesh Wood.
The distribution is limited from April 2018 in UK salon Samantha Cusick and there will only be four salons in the world using the machine.
Wella Professionals will then be scaling up the test salons scope to approximately 10 salons across UK, Germany, Austria and Switzerland to validate different business models before investing capital in scaling up the supply chain across key European markets. The brand anticipate being ready to scale up across key markets in Europe as of July 2019. Those interested can look at Wella.com for more info.
