Trends for men’s hair in autumn 2007

Men’s hair is more varied and exciting than ever, with floppy fringes, long and textured looks, and Elvis-influenced quiffs set. “Anything goes these days! With men’s hairstyles you can either go long and textured or really short, both can be very fashionable. All the latest trends resemble the classic men’s haircuts of the past, but have been retouched using more textures and colour combinations to bring the look up to date. The latest trends are far from boring.” Claudio Contrasti, Contrasti, London “Men’s hair is still in two main specific genres for autumn/winter. Firstly, you have the geek chic look which has been made popular by celebs such as Mika and Take That – this is a soft grunge look utilising natural movement and wave, using heavy grown-out layers hugging the face. This grown-out look is still hot. Secondly, you have the tailored, quiffed looks of the 40s and 50s. The neat, short back and sides with intricate barbering techniques have made a massive impact on catwalk shows, but also incorporate heavy fringes for an 80s rock influence.” Tim Scott-Wright, Lisa Shepherd, Kidderminster “In the coming months we’ll be looking to Elvis for inspiration having seen an increase in demand for 50s-influenced, barbered styles with strong perimeters. Clients are moving away from dandy, dishevelled looks, preferring instead a high-shine finish, rockabilly quiffs and side partings. Colour is going darker with the overall effect looking subtle, but strong and not as contrasting as blonde highlights. Catwalk inspiration comes from haircuts featured in the autumn/winter 2007 collections by Dolce & Gabbana, Prada and Calvin Klein.” Sara Elhaj and Abbey Cooper, Toni & Guy Guildford, Winners L’Oréal Men’s Image 2007 “The preppy look, complete with its floppy fringes and loose edges, is a very cool, very versatile style right now. Men’s fashion has become infinitely more feminised and softer hairstyles really suit this mood; you can easily work the style to look casual or dressed. The putties and gums that are now on the market are perfect for creating body and shape, while maintaining a ‘done, but undone’ style – you can be on-trend without being a fashion victim, something most men are concerned about with their hair.” Louis Byrne, Brooks & Brooks, London, HJ’s 2006 Men’s Hairdresser of the Year
