At the Redken Symposium 2019 we attended the Hot off the Press seminar and learnt that producing gorgeous editorial hair looks is more achievable than you might think. Remember, shooting editorial images doesn’t have to be just for publication in glossy magazines, the images can (and should) be used for salon marketing and social media content.
During the seminar
Redken artists Philip Barwick, Lindsey Olson and Jorge Joao shared the following top tips on how to create editorial hair for shoots.
Be savvy with social media
Many people tag people they like in their editorial hair images but consider what brands you want to identify with. What is your brand and how do you cultivate that with new relationships?
Enter competitions
When you enter competitions you’re the one who is creating the look and deciding what you do. You get to figure out your team. It doesn’t matter if you win or not, it’s just part of the process, and you'll gain so much experience. Look for competitions in your local area and on social media.
Be consistent
Let people know what you’re doing and do it at a consistent level. Make your editorial hair shoots look like a natural part of your everyday salon life.
Create common elements
The images and styles in your editorial hair collection must go together. There should be a common element between the pictures. A lot of this is acheivable in the prep.
Use tape instead of glue to anchor your hairstyles
If you're shooting more than one look on the same model tape can be more convenient as you can easily remove and add elements.
Remember this is a 2D image
Only focus on what the camera will see to avoid overwhelming yourself.
Use filters, try it in black and white – always think about how the photography effects can enhance the image and hairstyle. Also, what part of the model's body/ face will be in the shot? Is it a profile or a close-up?
Find a point of difference
Think outside of the box. Think: what would catch your eye?
