Whether they have more fun or not is up for debate, but one thing's for sure: Brits prefer blonde, according to new research by
Mintel. The research company's latest findings reveals blonde is the nation’s most popular dyed hair colour of choice.
last year 42% of Brits who coloured their hair transformed their tresses blonde (including those who dyed their hair at-home and in the salon) while just over a third (36%) of hair dye users plumped for brown locks, 17% chose an auburn/red mane and just under one in ten (8%) went black.
"As the majority of Brits have naturally darker hair, lightening their locks blonde is the nation’s most obvious hair colour solution," said Alex Fisher, senior beauty analyst at Mintel.
Jason Hogan, associate colourist at
Josh Wood Atelier can understand why blonde is such a popular choice for the public. "Blonde is that colour when done right is truly stunning, however because the palette is so light mistakes are easily visible."
If you have a client that's dark and looking for a dramatic change Jason recommends spreading the process across multiple appointments: "When blonding clients, I do it in several sessions to maintain integrity, see how it is growing out with the natural base and to let the client live in the colour and see what the would like to tweak and what I see needs to change. This achieves a head-turning, couture blonde."
To keep blondes looking fresh and healthy, it's important that your clients stick to a routine. "Maintenance is always key to ensure the health of the hair and visual impact of the colour. Recommend clients have a bonder with lightening services in salon and continue to maintain that condition at home with personalised shampoo, conditioner and weekly treatment," said Jason "A gloss every 4 weeks in salon also helps the hair reflect light beautifully between retouches."
