HJi speaks to a selection of inspirational rising hairdressing stars who have already made an impact on the industry.
Tasha Stevens
Tasha Stevens is 25-years-old and manager of Cox McMillan Battersea, London. She is also younger sibling to award-winning hairdresser Jamie Stevens.
"I'm from a family of hairdressers and trained in Somerset in the family salon with my mother and brother. I started managing one of my mum's salons at the age of 18, but decided to move to London for more experience."
"I started work at Cox McMillan, and was appointed manager within four months. During this time, I gained a L'Oréal Colour Degree and was a finalist at the L'Oréal Colour Trophy. I worked on shows and shoots and assisted my brother Jamie on television shows. This year I have been shortlisted for Manager of the Year at HJ's 2011 British Hairdressing Business Awards."
"My mum was a strong businesswoman and she inspired me to be like her. I like the creative side of hairdressing, but with a firm foundation in business I feel I can achieve what I want out of life. Working at Cox McMillan means I can pursue my love of colour while building my business and managerial skills under the guidance of one of the most intelligent businessmen I have ever met, Thomas McMillan."
"Jamie and I are very close and there have never been comparisons between us. Jamie has worked hard and will always be an inspiration. We support each other in our careers and whenever we meet up for drinks we end up talking about hair!"
"I love watching the salon go from strength to strength, and as a qualified assessor would like to have an academy one day. I get a lot of satisfaction from coaching people and watching them grow."
What advice would you give to other youngsters?
"With hard work anything is possible. If you are interested in business, read as many books as possible, such as Vidal Sassoon's autobiography and Richard Branson's Business Stripped Bare. Work with a company where you can grow and learn."
