HJi speaks to a selection of inspirational rising hairdressing stars who have already made an impact on the industry.
Petros Mairoudhiou
Twenty-three year old Petros Mairoudhiou is a creative stylist at Trevor Sorbie Covent Garden, and was the winner of the 2011 L'Oréal Colour Trophy's Men's Image Award.
"I've always wanted my work to get noticed and what better way than entering a competition such as the L'Oréal Colour Trophy. I looked at what was emerging from trend agencies and the catwalks and focused on creating texture in the hair. I call my look Modern Movement. When I was working on my image I thought about a quote from Leonardo Da Vinci - "Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication".
"Men's hairdressing has become really exciting and fashion aware recently and I love this. I also love the fact that men are very loyal; when they trust you with their hair, they become a client for life. However, they can also be the fussiest clients. Some men have strong ideas of what they want and are difficult to convince otherwise."
"I'm looking forward to a great year ahead after winning the award. I want to enter the L'Oréal Colour Trophy and HJ's British Hairdressing Awards. In the long term, I am hopeful that all my energy, passion and effort will pay off and one day I'll be a guest editor of HJ, following my win as British Hairdresser of the Year!"
What advice would you give to other youngsters?
"Keep up to date on trends. There are no shortcuts into men's hairdressing so learn as many creative techniques as possible."
