Why Teddy Bear Blonde is This Winter’s Trending Shade

Published 18th Jan 2024 by Chlo Weldon

As we settle into the chilliest months of the year, a new haircut is a refreshing way for clients to brighten up the season. And as warm tones are on the rise for this winter, it comes as no surprise that a new hair colour trend is sweeping the internet. With a 3400% increase in searches, don’t be surprised if the shade ‘Teddy Bear Blonde’ is next on your clients’ go-to colour list. We spoke to the experts on everything you need to know and why this look is trending…

What is Teddy Bear Blonde?

This hair colour of the moment is, in short, a soft balayage look that you should tone with an 8 or 9 base. Think lots of beige and sandy hues. “It’s a colour which encourages colourists to work with more depth and warmer tones and is a great colour for clients who like to be super blonde in the summer but switch it up in the winter,” says Jasmine Jones, Freelancer at Stã Studios.

It seems this trend is good news for anyone who is constantly fighting the gold for those clients who have stubborn warmth from lightening darker colours. “We need to be thinking about adding gold and beige to our toners and this is music to our ears for giving longevity to our looks with no neutralising needed,” says Adele Clark, OSMO Ambassador. “Instead, we are evening out and glossing our lift with complimenting levels and hues, working with what’s already there instead of fighting it.

“Whether the warmth is in the highlights or the base colour, as long as it appears somewhere in the look, you’ll have that Teddy Bear chic hue.”

What’s Driving This Trend?

“The trend is being driven largely by TikTok, with users flocking to the platform to share their hair inspiration,” says Nick Drewe, Trend Expert and Founder of ecommerce platform Wethrift. “In fact, there have been a staggering 45.9 million views on the app for teddy bear blonde hair colour, and over 76,000 views on the #teddybearblonde hashtag.

“This popular trend has resurfaced from the 90s, back when more natural tones and colours were a prominent hair trend. Think Jennifer Aniston starring as Rachel in Friends.

“Over on Google, searches for this particular style are on the rise, as more people search online for hair inspiration this winter. Searches for teddy bear blonde increased by 3400% over the past month alone, highlighting how warm tones are very much in for the winter, and how the trend is set to be one of the most popular requests in hair salons around the world over the next few months.”
