Summer hairstyles: from beach to bar
Summer is on its way, so why not take the opportunity to hold an in-salon event, introducing your salon's chosen suncare range while showcasing some simple looks to take clients from beach to bar?
Introduce products that will care for your client's hair by incorporating them into easy-to-recreate looks. "Professional products are key, not only for summer styling, but also for protection against harmful UV rays and chlorinated water," advises Claire Dawson of HOB Salons, London.
"Keep hair simple, fresh and effective to get the beach-to-bar style right. Best worn dishevelled, unstructured and slightly frayed, these loose looks offer the perfect relaxed summer styles, while also being catwalk favourites for spring/summer 2010."
Look One: Fishtail Braid

"The main ingredient for this look is volume; the fuller and longer the hair, the better. Plaits work best on unwashed hair, so work some volumising mousse through the mid-lengths and ends and lightly brush through before gathering the hair at one side and plaiting. Take a section from the left and one from the right and cross over in the middle. Hold securely with one hand, then use your free hand to repeat the action all the way down. Remember, do this loosely and don't be afraid of movement. Tease with your fingers to create even more texture. For evening, the plait can be applied tighter to give a stronger look with more definition. Applying serum before plaiting will create a sleeker finish."

Look Two: Big Bun

"The high bun is a simple, elegant look that proves a style can easily work from day to evening. To style by day, apply serum after drying and smooth hair into a high ponytail. Gently backbrush for texture, then twist the lengths around the base into a knot, securing with grips. Pull a few strands loose to create a dishevelled look. To transform for evening, apply wax then backcomb slightly from fringe to crown before securing in a ponytail. Add a bun ring, or even some pieces for extra volume, then backbrush before twisting around and securing. Pull hair apart with fingers to give a slight candyfloss effect and finish with a mist of firm-hold spray."

Look Three: Summer Waves
![]() Party Jennifer Aniston | ![]() Pool Diane von Fustenberg |
"These two gorgeous wavy looks can be easily achieved by your clients. To copy Jennifer's gentle waves, apply volumising spray and blow-dry the hair with a large barrelled brush. Loosely pin the hair up straight after blow-drying for a day look and reapply the volumising spray to add bulk at the roots. For the evening, take out all the pins, shake out the hair upside down, and give it a blast with the hairdryer to create loose waves, finishing with texturising powder at the roots to add volume. Catwalk-style tighter waves can easily be achieved by simply braiding the hair. Mist with volume spray and let the sun set the hair into place. At the end of the day, brush the braids out using a large paddle brush then mist with texture spray to add movement."

Look Four: Easy accessorised updo

"This summer, it's all about quick and easy 'bed head' looks, using the hair's natural texture to create messy updos. Use volumising mousse while blow-drying with a large round bristle brush to achieve movement and texture. By day, clients can rock the look with an effortlessly styled fringe. To dress it up for evening, hair accessories like flowers or Grecian bands will add instant glamour. These accessorised updos are perfect for the summer as they look fabulous with this season's boho styles while keeping the hair off the face to ensure that your client stays looking cool and glamorous all day and night."

Look Five: Summer Crop
![]() Bar Roberto Carvalli | ![]() Beach Michelle Williams |
"This head-hugging, graduated style is ultra feminine - understated, but refined. To get the look for daytime, apply mousse and blow-dry using a round thermo-bristle brush to build in additional volume. To do this, section off the top hai
r and blow-dry. Draw the hair onto the face and neatly into the nape, allowing the volume to be retained in the blow-drying. If your client would like a more casual finish, a crème gel can be worked into the hair to give added texture and shine. The look can easily be transformed for evening by applying a gel and combing into shape, allowing the fringe to sweep down over one eye as seen at the Cavalli show."
