There's nothing like an established client base to ease the transition of a salon move and for Michelle and David Spetch, their new venture started life with 400 style-conscious potential clients right on their doorstep.

As well as In the Pink salon, the couple own Fit 'n' Funky - a women-only gym and dance school with several hundred members. And, when space became available in the same building, it made sense for the couple to move the salon in right next door.

Housed in a converted mill in Atherton, Manchester, In the Pink now attracts not just gym-goers but also a large, glamour-loving female clientele and - despite the decidedly feminine colour scheme - male clients too.

What was the building like before moving in?

It was an old, empty mill - the sheer amount of space was what attracted us in the first place. We moved our gym into the building first and then, six months later, decided to move the salon into the same place.

What was the design brief?
The main colours used in our gym and company branding are pink, black and white so we wanted to stick to a similar colour scheme to link the two together. We wanted the salon to have the wow factor and, hopefully, offer something a bit different.

How did you incorporate the colour scheme throughout the salon?
The REM furniture is all-over pink or zebra print, and a feature wall is covered in a matching black, white and pink print. The other walls are painted fuchsia and steel grey and the marble-effect floor tiles have a pink and purple speckle running through them.

Is the salon divided into separate areas?
We used different flooring to provide a subtle division between each space. There's carpet in the beauty area, tiles throughout the salon and wooden flooring in the reception and waiting areas.

Is there anything about the salon that you'd change?
Not really. Moving the salon into the same space as the gym was the best thing we ever did, we just regret not opening them both in the same place at the same time.
