Always a red carpet hit, a retro updo gives any catwalk look a quirky twist, adding individuality to what can sometimes be a sea of bland, blonde hair extensions. Here are some of our favourite looks from recent red carpet events.

Tron star Olivia Wilde is the latest star to rock Rita Hayworth-inspired waves, with an asymmetric curly style.
Clive Johnston of Clive Alexander, Enniskillen says: "I love how Olivia's ultra-feminine, 40s-inspired concave curls are in complete contrast to her chic masculine attire. It's utterly fresh, and it breaks all the usual sartorial rules. The glints of light from those reflective chestnut tones works perfectly with the style."
Working a different but equally glamorous look, modern day pin-up Kelly Brook wears her glossy brunette tresses in a chic updo which shows off the dramatic bow detail on her gown.
"Wonderfully retro and strongly influenced by Mad Men , Kelly oozes glamour and elegance with this look," says Angelo Vallillo, Zullo & Holland, Nottingham. "The ultra-feminine style is a huge hit in the salon with our clients right now. It's wonderful to see in the evening and at weekends - simply beautiful."

January Jones is the star of retro series Mad Men and her red carpet style owes a lot to her alter-ego Betty Draper. This Oscars look oozes glamour and offers a truly individual look.
Richard Thompson of Mahogany Hairdressing, London says: "January's low parting and sculpted hair is very retro, but the shape is modern and it's not waved all over - having it slicked back at the sides brings the style into the current day. The height opens up her face to give a striking effect and the soft, buttery, pastel blonde tones are gorgeous."
Supermodel Iman also rocks a waved style, inspired by intricate 1920s looks. Michael Memet of Tikadi, Theydon Bois says: "Iman is a strong woman who exudes confidence. Although this retro hairstyle is beautifully styled, I don't know if it necessarily suits her particularly well, and in fact makes her look a little older."
