Spring/summer 09 hair cutting trends revealed

Hairstyle trends change with the season so make sure you know what to offer your clients this spring/summer with these predictions from top stylists.

"Curls are popular for spring and are best created using a combination of textures - undone meets high-maintenance - to give an unstructured curl. Waves are brought off the face, giving a youthful essence."

Phil Smith, Toni & Guy, Salisbury, Wiltshire

"This season we're seeing a mix of curls and bobs - more grown out and less precisely cut than before - short cuts, undercuts and choppy layers. Fringes of all types will be big, from sweeping to asymmetrical - there's something for every client. A big influence from the catwalk are ballerina buns and beautifully simple updos, which will also filter through for summer brides this year."

Errol Douglas, London

"Hair this season is sporty, understated yet confident, sleek, healthy and ultra-groomed. But this look is also organic and natural. These are statement cuts; preened and perfected, and glossy with health and rich with shimmering colour. Short hair will be the massive look for 2009, reflecting the challenging economy and the new, more austere climate. The choppy, texturised crop is an updated 80s pixie look. Bobs are still hot, but shorter this season with lots of layers and soft movement."

Richard Ward, Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa, London

"This season we will see a lot of geometric cuts but the lines are softer and more natural looking. Hair should be blow-dried into shape but straightening irons should be avoided. Hair should look shiny, healthy and expensive. Glossing serums and shine sprays will be used to give an expensive, rich sheen to the hair for touchable, sexy locks."

Jamie Brooks, Brooks & Brooks, London

"The key to being gorgeous and groomed is in the super glossy, expensive looking finish. Perfect for harmonising with the iridescent fabrics, shiny materials and accent metallics of this season's clothes, straight or curly demands frizz-free fabulous condition. Long hair will fall in face-framing layers and fringes will be wide, deep and heavy. Shorter classic shapes will be strong but feminine with bobs given edgy texture and a tailored look. Afro hair is kept sleek and long with movement through the layers. The coming season blends statement styling with soft natural looks."

Anya Dellicompagni, Francesco Group, Midlands

"The bob will take influences from the 20s, with stronger blunt fringes cut on the brow and the length kept short to the jawbone. With longer hair, short layered textured looks give a boy meets girl feel and is a great way to wear hair long but with a cooler attitude."

Jackie Ambrose, D&J Ambrose, Pinner, Middlesex

"Styling is free and easy this summer, with lots of loose wave and mega volume. It should be messy and tousled for young girls with lots of forehead bands - a slight throwback to the hippy 60s but with lots of volume. Short hair is symmetrical with focus on undercuts, mixing it with softness to keep it looking feminine."

HJ's 2008 Scottish Hairdresser of the Year, Tracey Devine, Angels, Aberdeen

"Whether it's waves, curls, texture or frizz, movement is here to stay this season. Think 70s and 80s disco glamour. The wet look is also back with a vengeance, a cross between 20s equestrian glamour and 80s cool. From long to short, up or down, hair is saturated with serums, gels and sprays for maximum hold and impact. And for extra glamour the quiff is the way to go. Buns, chignons, twists, plaits and rolls are also a big story for this year. Influenced by vintage glamour, hair is soft, textured, ethereal and fairylike."
