Inspired by fashion's current love affair with all things 70s, this season sees hair become more experimental than ever.

From the textured, multi-coloured Afros at the Topshop Unique Spring/Summer show, to celebrity style chameleons such as the always-inspiring Rihanna and her ruby red ringlets, editorial hair is fast becoming a favourite with those outside the fash-pack.

Trend-conscious clients who want to stand out in a crowd will love this look, which can be dressed up or down.

"The texture trend has swept the catwalk and high street during the past six months," explains Dylan Bradshaw, Dylan Bradshaw Salons, Dublin. "The next stage is for hair to become even bigger, more glamorous and sexier than ever. It's all about distressed, undone finishes that ooze confidence. The key is to create that dishevelled edge that doesn't look like the client has just stepped out of the salon."

But hair doesn't have to be scary to score style points - boho waves, choppy, textured crops and midi styles with masses of movement all count in the texture tribe. Take a cue from boho babes, such as Sienna Miller and Daisy Lowe, for a high-end, highly wearable take on the look.

Angelo Vallillo, Zullo & Holland, Nottingham, explains: "Simple, soft-textured hair is hot for Summer. Laid-back and effortless, it's easy for clients to achieve every day. Start with a prep spray, blow-dry for extra body, or air-dry to enhance waves and curls. Using tongs or a wand, take small sections, curl the midlengths and leave the roots and ends free. Working the sections using a brush, smooth out curls and waves to create natural texture. Part hair down the middle or slightly off-centre for an easy-going vibe."
