It’s hard to believe that the beautiful bright space that is now Spoiled Hairdressing in St Andrews, Fife, was once a cowshed! Since its days as a home for bovine beasts, it has also been used as an art gallery, and this is far easier to believe. The spacious interior has the air of an upmarket, modern gallery, with swathes of white walls and skylights dousing the space in natural daylight.
It took a lot of hard work to create the desired look, however, as co-owner Glenn Malloy recalls. "The décor, flooring and fittings were very dated and was in need of full refurbishing. My business partner Steven Davies and I were willing to take on this big project as we love the sense of achievement you get at the end of the project and seeing your ideas come to life."
The transformation took around 12 weeks, but there was a fair amount of preliminary work to be done before the more creative elements of the refit could begin. "The building had a lot of water damage which meant the property had to be drained – this was a huge job and involved taking up all the flooring."
There were some good reasons for picking the site, however. Says Glenn: "The location is in the centre of St Andrews, meaning it was the perfect spot to be in, with many tourists, golfers, students and local residents always walking along the St Andrews high street."
The owners already had a clear vision for the new business as they had an existing salon in another part of Fife and wanted the new site to be a continuation of the brand.
White is the predominant shade within the salon, but accents of colour, including green, navy and brown help create more of a statement. Also adding varying textures to the look and feel of the salon are different floorings, including marble, limestone and parquet in various sections of the salon.
Perhaps the other most striking feature of the salon is the expansive reception area which houses a large retail space, giving clients the room to browse and buy in comfort.
The reception area flows into the cutting zone, where a bespoke styling unit runs the length of the cutting room. The modern black and chrome styling chairs were supplied by Takara Belmont.
Takara Belmont chairs are also found in the backwash area, where softer lighting is used to create a more relaxing atmosphere. Every element of the dazzling salon had been designed to ensure it lives up to its name, and clients always feel thoroughly spoiled.
