It wasn't all about big bouncy blow-dries and voluminous updos at the Met Gala 2014 - here we take a look at the celebs representing the short and sweet styles.

On paper, Maggie Gyllenhaal's blonde pixie crop shouldn't work quite so well as it does, but paired with
a 60s-inspired, Op-Art Valentino gown, the whole look feels fabulously retro. I would have loved to have seen a little hair accessory in there, but otherwise this is a typically quirky cool look from Maggie.

Unfortunately, I can't get quite so excited about Shailene Woodley's crop. While I loved the cut initially, something in the colour and styling on this occasion feel slightly too mature for the 22-year-old starlet. Still, any cut for a film role can be tricky to wear in the real world and at least
her Rodarte gown brought the sparkle!

Supermodel Stella Tennant can do no wrong in my book, even with a choppy fringe that mere mortals wouldn't be able to wear without looking slightly deranged. The edgy cut is a perfect contrast to her feathered and frou-frou gown and I adore it. Viva Stella!

I love the straight hair revival that we've been seeing lately, and I love Kirsten Wiig's blunt bob, but somehow the pairing don't work for me on this occasion. I do think that straight and structured was the way to go with her minimalist black, high-necked dress.

Michelle Williams rocked a more successful take on short and straight. Perhaps it's the side-parting or perhaps it's that creamy blonde hue, but this gets a thumbs up from me. Once again I find myself thinking it would be good to have had a hair accessory of some sort - Michelle always looks good in an alice band and Louis Vuitton, who made her dress, are also pretty handy with an accessory. Next time...

Kate Mara brought tousled texture to her midi bob for a cool look that contrasts perfectly with the elegance of Â
her Valentino Couture gown.

Rita Ora rocked a faux undercut style for her Met Gala debut, with a side-parted, slicked-back look. Unfortunately what the pictures don't show is the slick of gold paint down her side-parting, in
a catwalk-inspired move.
