Born into a family of hairdressers, Gaetano (Guy), 65, opened the first Toni&Guy salon with his brother Toni in Clapham, London in 1963.
Since then the company had grown from a single shop to thousands of salons in over 20 countries worldwide.
Hairdressing was in Guy's blood and some of his earliest memories are said to include picking up hairdressing pins at the age of three in his father's salon, but he was also a lover of music and the arts and had set up his own recording studio in West Hollywood.
Tony Rizzo, who founded the Alternative Hair Show, was first to lead the tributes to Guy. He said: "Guy was extremely special and touched countless lives, a true giver and a great family man. He will truly be missed worldwide."
