Robert Eaton, creative director Russell Eaton Leeds and Barnsley & Wella technical director, shares his Salon International memories, the reasons why it's a must for Northern hairdressers and why it's more than worth the train journey down to London!
What is your fondest memory?
A great memory for me is actually the train journey down to Salon International! The Russel Eaton team and I along with our models would all get the train down from Doncaster bright and early on a Sunday morning. The train would always be full of other hairdressers and their models. The team and I would be in one carriage and other industry icons such as Mark Hill and his team in another carriage and so on. It was great fun! Another great memory is from 2002 when I first auditioned for The Fellowship for British Hairdressing Fame Team and then the following year in 2003 when I got through to the Fame Team.
How many years have you been attending?
I’ve been going to Salon International for as long as I can remember. My dad, Russell Eaton used to take me along with him to see the shows when I first started out as a Saturday boy in the salon when I was about 15/16 years old. I’ve been going every year ever since.
What was your first show at Salon International?
I believe it was a Wella Young Hairdressers Challenge show. This was one of the earlier competitions way back in the day that Wella ran before it launched TrendVision. At the time we had one model and had to present on stage.
What’s you favourite part of Salon?
In this day and age when everything is on social media it can be really nice to actually catch up with industry friends and see everyone face to face and Salon International is perfect at bringing everyone together. I love seeing other people on stage and watching their work first hand, and there’s no better place than to do that than at Salon International.
