Richard ward shares his shortcuts success story Richard Ward is no strange face in the UK hair industry. He started his salon journey at the age of just 17 – young, passionate, and ready for a life-long career. Fast forward 37 years and he’s now a highly-regarded celebrity hairdresser and owns one of the busiest salons in the UK, Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa. Here, Richard speaks to HJ about his success and how embracing Shortcuts helped propel his salon to the next level. What do you love most about your day-to-day in the salon? I love creating different hairstyles. I still love cutting hair. It’s a people business and that makes you very passionate. You’re obviously very well known in the industry. How would you describe your reputation? I would say after 25 years that our reputation at Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa is quite high. We do over a thousand clients a week, so we’re one of the busiest salons in the UK. We have a reputation for running a very tight, very good business. The only way you ever get that kind of reputation is by having a fantastic team. So, you use Shortcuts in your salon - What do you love most about the system? Before Shortcuts I was a bit of a technophobe and we were still filling in appointment sheets using pencil. We had to do something though – our business couldn’t continue to grow without software. Now I can log on from anywhere in the world and see what my day looks like. We can track everything. Just being able to click a button and know who’s coming back and how many times people have been – that is so important to us all in the salon. Shortcuts in salon What impact has mobile technology had on your business? It’s been unbelievable. The fact that every member of our team has access to Shortcuts on their mobile phone has been absolutely essential to the better running of our business. There’s no more running up and down stairs asking someone when their next client is in. It really frees up the receptionist’s time. Achievements must be high on your radar. What has Shortcuts helped you achieve? All the data that Shortcuts collects is so important to Hellen and I. Being able to track everything from product sales to weekly turnover and client retention. Even today – I found out by just a click of a button that we have increased our client rebooking average from eight weeks to seven. How do you like to unwind once the day is done? When I finish at the end of the day we get the gin and tonic out! And we just check Shortcuts to see what’s happening tomorrow morning. But you know what?
