Red carpet hair: national television awards 2012

Stars of the small screen celebrated their successes at the 2012 National Television Awards, held at the O2 Arena in London.

Textured tress and vintage-inspired updos were key trends of the evening, with ponytails, beehives and casual waves in abundance.

From Kerry Katona and Fearne Cotton's 1920s-inspired looks to Caroline Flack's dip-dyed lengths and Little Mix's adventurous colour, here we take a look at the best hairstyles from the red carpet with thoughts from Paul Farr from Destin Hair & Beauty, Redditch and Natalie Doxey from JAKATA Hair & Beauty, Warrington.

N: This updo looks elegant and classy on Amy. It's completely different to her usual long and glamorous style but there's still volume in the look, which is a trademark for her.

N: The natural look on Caroline works really well. The loose, natural texture complements her dip-dyed length perfectly and although it's styled, it still feels effortless.

N: This tousled style on Carol flatters her and gives a youthful, modern look.

P: A young, natural style for a young girl getting used to the red carpet! The natural look with loose curls works really well for Sophie.

N: This soft updo is sophisticated and elegant. The loose texture complements her bold, striking features, leaving her with the perfect look for the awards.

N: The simple updo works well against Charlie's statement eye makeup. It's a soft look that's fantastic on the Eastenders actress.

P: Full marks to Lucy for trying out a different style. However, there's a little too much happening, so I'd suggest toning down the look to leave the perfect red carpet look.

N: This voluminous look is classic Chloe. It's chic and smooth, whilse the dark colour gives a high gloss finish - perfect for the red carpet!

N: This updo is trademark Heidi. It's smooth, sleek and full of volume. Yet again, another classy look for her!

P: Sam looks really glamorous here. Her loose updo is a perfect choice for the awards and perfectly in keeping with the unstructured updo trend which we've seen a lot of on the red carpet in Hollywood recently.

P: I love Lydia's long bob and the glamorous red carpet styling. It's great to see that she has broken the Essex mould with something quite different.

N: The voluminous waves are classic Holly. It's elegant and sophisticated while still being completely flattering. A perfect choice!

P: Tess gives her usual straight style a twist by adding in plaits but I think they may be a little young for such a glamourous lady! A great attempt to try something new by Tess, but we say bring back the waves we love you for.

N: The smooth updo with the contrasting texture of the plait and waves work really well together. I love how its been pulled back from her face to show off her fabulous features!

P: Karen's colour here is gorgeous! It makes her hair appear healthy and full of life, making it perfect for the red carpet.

P: Laura Whitmore

Laura's natural blonde hue looks stunning and is completely understated. A lovely, young look for the MTV presenter.

N: The long, loose waves are a statement look for Jorgie. It gives her style a fresh and natural look that's fabulous for the awards!

P: Michelle is truly soap royalty but I think this look would work better if she loosened up the curls and amped up the shade, which would leave her looking even more glam for the NTAs.
