The crème de la crème of the music world were out in force at the annual Mercury Music Awards which was held on the same night as the GQ Men of the Year Awards.

Rock n' roll hair was the flavour of the night and surprise winner Speech Debelle was styled by industry icon Errol Douglas.

speechbigsmllr.jpgErrol tells us how he created Speech's winning look and the experts talk through the hot styles of the night.

Speech Debelle - created by Errol Douglas

speech3sm.jpg"I coloured her hair especially for the day, focusing on the Mohican section, giving her highlights of light blonde and burnt shades.

"The sides of her hair were then corn-rowed in a crisscross pattern, leaving out the Mohican section of the hair. This Mohican section of hair was changed throughout the evening for the three different looks."

"For the red carpet, I used big-barrelled tongs all over the Mohican section of the hair, and hairspray to hold, and an oil speechagainsm.jpgsheen to keep the hair looking glossy.

"The stage look was a little bit more dramatic, it was backcombed at the roots to give lift and movement, the hair was teased up really high throughout the Mohican section, and sprayed for extra hold.

"For Speech's acceptance, I blow-dried the previous look out using a medium round Kent brush.  I then created small sausage sections all over the head, pulling hair backwards and then tucking under and pinning it before spraying with hairspray."

And the Best of the Rest of the Celebrity Hair

florencesm.jpgFlorence Welch (Florence and the Machine)

"Florence's look is dominated by the colour which is fantastic and vibrant.

"I really like the different tones that create the depth.

"The look is OK for a music awards event although I would have preferred it to have been a bit more edgy and dirty looking texture wise - more matte than super shiny."

bethdittosm.jpgBeth Ditto (Gossip)

"If you're a Beth Ditto fan she looks amazing. Beth works with what she's got and works it hard.

"The make-up complements in a contradicting way with the bright orange hair.

"It looks very this season's catwalk overall - the outfit is safe but with so much going on with the hair and face it works and looks perfect for the Mercury prize."

"I feel this look is a bit dated and far too safe for the Mercury Awards.

"The hair is natural with highlights and not much make up so, while it's not very this season, it is very pretty.

I would have suggested a bit more pizzazz for the red carpet."

Natasha Khan (Bat For Lashes)

"Natasha looks like she hasn't made much of an effort but overall the look works at a music event with the hippyish headband and heavy fringe, which I think suits her well."

larouxsm.jpgLa Roux

"La Roux's hairstyle is bang on trend and sits perfectly with the rock look we are heading towards.

"However I would make the quiff a little more styled, incorporating more hair from the back of the head which would give her a better shape.

"The Mercury Awards are where the cool people hang out and La Roux fits in seamlessly."

Darren Fowler, Clipso

lauramarlingsm.jpgLaura Marling

"Laura Marling's look appears effortless and un-styled, fitting in well with the folk hair trend we have seen on the catwalks.

Getting the look of 'undone' hair is sometimes the hardest but I feel Laura achieves this well."
